about

After a five-year musical hiatus, Vanessa Laurin returned to the studio in 2018 to produce BEFORE THE COYOTES COME, her first fully solo album. The album blends her signature otherworldly vocal harmonies with richly textured musical landscapes, and explores themes of grief, loss and survival.

This project is the culmination of over two decades of composing and recording original material with her partner under the guise of First of June. COYOTES was entirely written, arranged, performed and produced by Laurin, and recorded over six months in her home studio near Ottawa, Canada.

Thank you for supporting independent music.

Track Name: Before the Coyotes Come
cannot move me
cannot take on this mountain, my body
cannot bruise the bedrock underneath
the tender parts are hardening
clean the wound and cauterize the flesh
pray the soul will heal
clean the wound and cauterize the flesh
pray the soul will heal
will not give in
will not listen; it’s just the wind howling
and will not give in
will give them such a fight
such a fight worth remembering
clean the wound and cauterize the flesh
pray the soul will heal
clean the wound and cauterize the flesh
pray the soul will heal
wash the blood off, burn the rag
before the coyotes
wash the blood off, burn the rag
before the coyotes come
can you move me?
can you take on this mountain, my body?
can you choose the perfect poison
and hold it up to my lips?
counting sheep, one by one
‘til the coyotes come
counting sheep, one by one
‘til the coyotes come
they’ll pick them off, one by one
(oh, when they come)
they’ll pick their bones clean when they come
(oh, when they come)
they’ll pick us off, one by one
(oh, when they come)
they’ll pick our bones clean when they come
come
come
come
clean the wound and cauterize the flesh
pray the soul will heal
clean the wound and cauterize the flesh
pray the soul will heal
wash the blood off, burn the rag
before the coyotes
wash the blood off, burn the rag
before the coyotes come before the coyotes come
before the coyotes come before the coyotes come

Track Name: Aquamarine
if there is one thing i’ve learned, it’s:
never trust the water
her ambition is solely treacherous
and she will wave, then without warning
she will drag you under, darling
cradle you in her aquamarine arms
and please forgive me
if all this seems like idle talk
but i have witnessed so many curious things
please forgive me
if all this seems like idle talk
though you would hunger for her comforts
the fire fasts until she’s summoned
then ferocious and atrocious are her appetites
and she will tease in careful measure
she will take her awful pleasures
she will haunt you, she will taunt you
she will swallow you whole
and please forgive me
if all this seems like idle talk
but i have witnessed so many curious things
please forgive me
if all this seems like idle talk
yes, i have witnessed so many curious things
please forgive me
if all this seems like idle talk
if there is one thing i’ve learned, it’s:
never trust the water
if there is one thing i’ve learned, it’s:
never trust the water
and the wind and the waves
are washing over me
and the wind and the waves
are washing over me
and the wind and the waves
are washing over me
and the wind and the waves
are washing over me
and the wind and the waves
are washing over me
and the wind and the waves
are washing over me
wash over me
wash over me

Track Name: Formidable Foes
i’ll grind your bones to make my bread
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll grind your bones to make my bread
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
‘cause i’ve got to feed
you know i’ve got to feed, hey
i’ll save your skull to sip my wine
no, there is no finer thing
than savouring your suffering
i’ve got to feed
you know i’ve got to feed
you know i’ve got to feed
you know i’ve got to feed
won’t you come a little closer now
i need a bit of sustenance
won’t you come a little closer now
and show a bit of reverence
won’t you come a little closer now
i need a bit of sustenance
won’t you come a little closer now
i need a bit of sustenance
and an eye for an eye
seems a little too kind
no, your blood is the due that is owed me
and you can try as you might
you can’t cast me aside
not as long as there’s breath in your body
and there are things at play, child
forces of nature, and so it goes
sharp of wit and claw and fang
you know it’s how we roll
red-lipped formidable foes
(would you take us on?)
red-lipped formidable foes
(would you take us on?)
the most formidable foes
(would you take us on?)
the most formidable foes
(would you take us on?)
and we’ve got to feed you
know we’ve got to feed
you know we’ve got to feed
you know we’ve got to feed
i’ll grind your bones to make my bread
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll grind your bones to make my bread
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out
i’ll tear your throat out

Track Name: You Wanted In
here’s where it went wrong:
you never learned how to listen
you never knew the words
but you always had to sing along
but never in tune or in time
no, your little glass hands
weren’t made for clapping
quick to pick every pocket
but never to pick a side
and as we say our goodbyes
you’ll choke on all your bells and whistles
guess the joke ain’t over
until the violence in me dies
so you wanted in
and i tried to warn you
there is no escape from this
but you wanted in
and i tried to warn you
there is no escape from this cold
but you wanted in
and i tried to warn you
there is no escape from this
but you wanted in
and i tried to warn you
there is no escape from this cold
and you thought i meant the weather
and no, you hadn’t felt a chill
and in any case, you like autumn better
but a balmy breeze could do no ill
a shame you lost your lucky sweater
once knit for you by sisters three
all the loose threads gathered together
and scattered on the wind
by chickadee-dee-dee-dee
(scattered on the wind)
(scattered on the wind)
well, i used to have magic
i used to have her medicine lining my pockets
then along came a spider
and sat down beside her
and i used to have magic
i used to have her medicine flowing through me
and now the parched earth bleeds
and the spider weaves
then it all went pear-shaped
(then it all went pear-shaped)
then it all went pear-shaped
(then it all went pear-shaped)
then it all went pear-shaped
like a tilt-a-whirl
like a funhouse mirror
(then it all went topsy-turvy down)
you wanted in, there is no escaping
(i used to have magic)
you wanted in, there is no escaping
(i used to have magic)
you wanted in, there is no escaping
(i used to have magic)
you wanted in, there is no escaping
(until you came along)

Track Name: Nest of Bones
birdy step away from me
birdy fly away home
birdy step away from me
birdy fly away home
with someone else’s daughter
in your throat
fly to your nest of bones
my queen of desolation
you are brooding your clutch of stillborns
birdy step away from me
(she lives in the shadows)
birdy fly away home
(high on the hilltop)
birdy step away from me
(says, “you will be happy here”)
birdy fly away home
with someone else’s daughter in your throat
(we will be happy here)
fly to your nest of bones
my queen of desolation
you are brooding your clutch of stillborns
in your nest of bones
(she lives in the shadows)
in your nest
(she lives in the shadows)
and you, you will soon learn
i’m the bitterest of worms
and you, you will soon learn
i’m the bitterest of worms
the bitterest of worms
the bitterest of worms
the bitterest
and it is cold now
in your nest of bones
you live in your shadows
you’re high on your hilltop
you’re in your nest of bones
my queen of desolation
you are clutching your bloody hope
you hold me to your breast
you hold me in your shadows
say, we will be happy here

Track Name: The Longest Way Down
i wasn’t ready for this
to sever my tether to your shadow
i wasn’t ready for this
to be the buffer that broke your fall
i wasn’t ready or willing or able
i wasn’t ready, not ready at all
and everyone wants to be the celestial body
but nobody wants to be the orbiting satellite
(everybody wants to be)
(everybody wants to be)
(everybody wants to be)
(everybody wants to bleed)
you were always so content
at the bottom of the pecking order
you’re always so content
just kicking back and toeing the line
but now you are so hell-bent
on your own annihilation
and it’s become quite evident
that we’ll soon be jumping, not flying
and everyone wants to be the celestial body
but nobody wants to be the orbiting satellite
and everyone wants to be the celestial body
but nobody wants to be the orbiting satellite
i wasn’t ready for this
to sever my tether to your shadow
i wasn’t ready for this
to be the buffer that broke your fall
and i wasn’t ready or willing or able
i wasn’t ready, not ready at all
and everyone wants to be the celestial body
if you’re holding on to me
and i’m holding on to nothing
which one of us has the longest way down?
rock face and canyon walls
peregrine and red-tail call
gliding on thermals
while our bodies go hurtling
if you’re holding on to me
at terminal velocity
and this all ends badly
then it’s all on your back
because i wasn’t ready to break your fall

Track Name: The Bad Luck Girl
when they surveyed the scene
they said no cause could ever be confirmed
though survivors, if any, were unlikely
no trace of the girl was ever found
she stole out of the house
crept about
then doubled back again
once the trail had grown cold
but the rafters still smouldered within
and she said, “oh, what a noise we will make
when we’re found out!
oh, what a noise we will make
when we’re found out!”
the floorboards are creaking
and window panes rattling
is it the wind come for the bad luck girl?
they say she still haunts these halls
shadow across the walls
set them alight in their beds, babes and all
when they surveyed the scene
they said no cause could ever be confirmed
oh, the matches and the kerosene
quickly consumed the girl
and when the flames, they roared
she said, “oh, what a noise we will make
when we’re found out!
oh, what a noise we will make
when we’re found out!”
the floorboards are creaking
and window panes rattling
is it the wind come for the bad luck girl?
they say she still haunts these halls
shadow across the walls
set them alight in their beds, babes and all
she said, “oh, what a noise we will make
when we’re found out!”
(the floorboards are creaking)
(and window panes rattling)
(is it the wind come for the bad luck girl?)
she said, “oh, what a noise we will make
when we’re found out!”
(the floorboards are creaking)
(and window panes rattling)
(is it the wind come for the bad luck girl?)
she said, “oh, what a noise we will make
when we’re found out!”
(the floorboards are creaking)

oh, what a noise we will make
